Beyond The Job Title: Meeting Maslow’s Hierarchy

At The Green Room, education is about so much more than what happens in the classroom. It’s about creating a sense of belonging, building trust and making sure every young person feels safe, valued and ready to learn.

Our approach recognises that the little things often make the biggest difference. From preparing welcoming spaces and sharing a cup of tea to offering a listening ear or a moment of laughter, every interaction helps create an environment where young people feel comfortable, supported and able to thrive.

More Than Just Teaching

At The Green Room, everyone plays a part in creating a community where young people can flourish. That might mean being a teacher, mentor, role model or simply someone who takes the time to listen.

We understand that supporting young people means looking beyond traditional job titles and responding to what each individual needs in the moment.

This reflects our values of Kindness, Curiosity and Change: taking the time to understand each young person, responding with compassion and helping them discover what they are capable of.

Regulation Before Education

Before young people can engage with learning, they need to feel safe, settled and ready. This is reflected in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, which highlights the importance of meeting basic physical and emotional needs first.

Are they hungry, tired, cold or feeling overwhelmed? Sometimes, a toastie and a cup of tea, a familiar routine or a friendly welcome can make all the difference.

Consistency is equally important. Calm, predictable environments and trusted relationships help young people feel secure, knowing that the people around them will offer reassurance, understanding and support.

At The Green Room, we believe in regulation before education. By recognising and responding to individual needs, we create the foundations for learning, growth and positive change.

Building Trust in the Little Moments

Belonging isn't built through grand gestures. It grows through the everyday interactions that show young people they matter.

A game of Uno, a conversation about the weekend, a shared joke or a creative activity can help build connections and ease the transition into the school day.

These moments create opportunities to develop trust, communication and resilience. They also allow staff to challenge young people constructively, encouraging them to reflect on their choices, take responsibility and develop greater independence.

Our approach balances high levels of support with high challenge. We walk alongside young people, helping them build the confidence and skills they need to take their next steps.

A Person-First Mindset

At the heart of everything we do is a simple principle: see the person before the pupil.

Every young person has their own strengths, challenges, interests and aspirations. By understanding the individual behind the behaviour, we can provide the right support while recognising their potential.

This person-first approach connects closely with our ROCCIT principles: Resilience, Organisation, Communication, Community, Initiative and Teamwork. These are skills we nurture every day, through relationships, routines, shared experiences and opportunities to grow.

At The Green Room, it's often the smallest things that make the biggest difference. By leading with kindness, remaining curious about each young person's needs and creating opportunities for positive change, we help young people build confidence, discover their strengths and achieve great things.

Because education isn't just about lessons or qualifications. It's about belonging, believing in potential and creating the conditions for every young person to thrive.
