Our Curriculum

Tree

Maths - Our aim is to identify and bridge gaps in mathematical knowledge and skills, so that pupils are confident in the KS2 curriculum before moving onto KS3 / KS4 programmes of study. We explore practical and real-life contexts to make links between learning and the relevance of mathematical skills in daily life and different careers.

Qualifications: Entry Level Certificate, GCSE Maths, GCSE Statistics

English - We consolidate KS2 skills so pupils can access the KS3 and KS4 curriculum at their own pace given periods of absence from mainstream education. Pupils enjoy the diverse range of topics and areas and are prepared for KS4 qualifications appropriate to their individual requirements, as well as fostering a love for literature.

Qualifications: Early Level Certificate in English. GCSE English

Science - Science connects so many different areas of the curriculum, helping pupils deepen their understanding of other subjects. All three sciences are inescapably part of our everyday lives and our aim is to help pupils embrace this to progress in science through as much practical, hands-on learning as possible.

Qualifications: AQA Unit Awards, Entry Level Certificate & GCSE

PSHE - Personal, social, health and economic education gives us the opportunity to challenge pupil beliefs and opinions, contextualise skills learnt across the curriculum and give them a greater understanding about the world we live in and their impact on it. It provides our pupils with the practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive and responsible lives.

RSE (Relationship and Sex Education) allows pupils to gain a greater understanding of relationships focusing on exploring the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, having relationships and learning about human sexuality and sexual health.

Humanities - pupils gain an understanding of the society and cultures they inhabit, influenced as they are by religion, money, war, power, and love, enabling them to have broad-ranging discussions and opinions. We encourage pupils to challenge their preconceptions, to see things from different perspectives and undertake critical thinking.

Qualifications: ELC on request

1:1 - All pupils are offered bespoke regular 1:1 sessions in English and Maths, and Science for those working towards qualifications, to help address gaps in learning and boost progress.

Land-Based Studies - Pupils in KS3 are responsible for the animal enclosures, the care, health and enrichment of our animals, and understanding animal behaviour. They also manage, develop and upkeep the allotment and polytunnel areas. Pupils in KS4 can progress onto a BTEC Land Based Studies qualification which we deliver across three subject areas - Animal Care, Equine and Horticulture. Pupils work through the Pearson BTEC Level 1 Introductory in Land-Based Studies and are able to progress through an Award, Certificate or Diploma.

Construction - Younger pupils primarily explore methods of construction through play and small projects, enabling them to gain a variety of basic tool skills. KS3 allows pupils to build on these skills, and put them to use in real life experiences, preparing them for BTEC qualifications which we deliver within our purpose built barn.

Food & Cookery - Equips pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating, developing vital life skills that enable them to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life.

Qualifications: BTEC Home Cooking Skills

Bushcraft - Pupils learn how to make fire using flint and steel, and then how to use the fire to cook for themselves. Pupils learn the skills required to survive outdoors drawing inspiration from different time periods and how humans sustained themselves in our weatherproof camp providing permanent shelter.

Art - Art lessons enable pupils to explore their creativity, find confidence in their work and build resilience. We explore different ways to create art as well as looking into famous artists and their work.

Enrichment - The enrichment lesson changes weekly and ranges from photography and languages to life skills, hygiene, British values, Lego club and world wide wonders.

Music - Pupils have the opportunity to learn a variety of musical instruments. Peripatetic guitar, piano and drum teachers offer 1:1 lessons and can put enthusiastic pupils through music grades.

Duke of Edinburgh - The DofE scheme offers opportunities for our pupils to gain confidence through learning new skills, and broadening their horizons by making links outside of school through volunteering and developing teamwork, fitness and resilience during a team expedition.

Trips - We offer many enriching trips ranging from educational visits linked to subject planning and careers focused visits to rewards trips at the end of each term to celebrate success and have some fun!

Sport - Through Y+ Coaching, professional sports coaches develop team players, who can take the lead and learn to work collaboratively with others. Ultimately our pupils improve their fitness, their confidence and those children that “don’t do sport” are usually a thing of the past.

Therapy - We have two humanistic therapists striving to build a therapeutic relationship with all pupils, regularly assessing all pupils, and offering one to one sessions when appropriate. The emphasis is on self development and we aim to create a safe and trusting space where concerns, interests, strengths, self awareness and resilience can be explored.

Outreach - Some pupils greatly benefit from outreach support; with the aim to bridge the gap between home and school in order to promote self development and achievement of potential. Outreach support focuses on mental and physical health, school refusal and transitions, home circumstances, peer conflicts and parental needs.

Careers - From Year 9, pupils have the opportunity to undertake work experience with a range of local organisations. From Year 10, pupils visit local colleges with us to help them start planning their next steps after GRK. Year 11 pupils are offered professional careers advice and are supported with applications and making the transition to their next placement
